DVD Format - Explained

Consumer DVD burners for computers and set top DVD players and recorders use various DVD formats.  DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD Ram are the DVD format currently being used for equipment.  Some pieces of equipment are capable of recording all of these DVD formats, some just one or another.

DVD+R/RW claims to have the broadest compliance with existing DVD players.  Most new DVD players have the capability of playing this DVD format.  I have found that Apex DVD players can play most any the DVD format, even their lower cost decks.

DVD burner drives for your computer come in internal and external drives.  Pioneer makes very good DVD burners that utilize these different DVD formats.  Disks for the various DVD formats are about the same price except for DVD Ram.  They are more expensive.
